i know that the locals seem to think that us brits are a pushover for taking in waifs and strays but i think the animal world has passed the word around too!! last night i was outside on the terrace watering the hanging baskets when all of a sudden something fluttered past my face. i looked down and there on the wall next to my hand was a little blue budgy. we sort of eyed each other up for a few seconds and he (well i think it's a he it's blue after all) didn't move at all. i didn't want to move as i thought it would scare him so just spoke to him for a little while and he started closing his eyes as if he was sleepy. i quickly grabbed him, where he promptly bit my finger, and put him into a pet carrier. i gave him some of hatties' seeds (my rescued chicken) and a dish of water. i was sure he'd be dead in the morning but he's hopping around eating his breakfast. his name is bobbie and as i've never had a budgy any advice would be gratefully received. i don't know if i can cope with all this responsibility it's going to be fun and games keeping the rescued kittens away from bobby and separating my adult cat from the kittens!! oh well life in italy is never dull

Hi All,

I know we have all heard of these sad cases of abandoned/left dogs which make us feel helpless. But on Friday afternoon I came out on to my terrace only to find a tiny puppy in the corner. It came straight up to me tail wagging was not at all frightened & looked well fed. It obviously had human contact as it was so friendly. we think it's about 8 or 10 weeks only, and looks it will grow to be only this size of a terrier, if not smaller!! We live in a remote area with no passing traffic so it was intentionaly dumped.

She's eating dried food happily and drinking well, she's sleeping outstide with out any protest.
She loves my granddaughter who has named her Foxy due to her large pointed ears, so she is good with children and doesn't mind being picked up - infact loves the attention, she even managed to get an old lead we had on her.

We are DESPERATE to find her a home as i go back to the UK in two weeks, and looking onto it online it seems she needs 6months post bloodtest to get her passport!

I'll happily drop her to you if needs be.... she really is a lovely & also loving puppy - I've attached a piture of her

Any questions or suggestions most welcome

Last Sunday someone abandoned a young crossbreed (femina) here at Cellino. On contacting the carabiniere was told to contact the Commune, who informed me that someone would be along wed am .I waited but no one came. after trying to get info from the commune who more or less just shrugged their shoulders. I contacted a carabiniere friend at Castel Nouvo who managed to track down the dept responsible known as the Vigilo Urbano. i was told they would phone me on the Friday which they did an said they would come out to me that morning or if not then it would be on monday. of course someone did turn up eventually today (monday), but not to take the dog away but to check if she had been microchipped(she hadn't) the upshot is that i have to wait while The officer files a report to the Local Sindaco who then contacts ASL for permission to take the dog to the Commune compound. I explained that I already have two dogs of my own and could not take on the responsibility of another indefinitley. Was told it would be another week,I was then told I could let her run free. I could not believe my ears.
On asking how long they kept the dogs in the compound and she said if no one gave them a home they were just turned loose again to roam. This dog is lovely, soft mouthed a bit of spaniel in her ,mainly black and tan, playful and gentle. I reckon she's about seven months old probably not spayed. If anyone looking for a good natured dog PM me.

just a quick update on my rescued chicken (hattie) she's now laying an egg every day and follows me around the garden chatting away it's just the best thing ever to see her so happy after such a horrible experience. the kittens brogan and kelsey are a joy running around the place but unfortunately willow my cat who is now 10 years old doesn't like them at all which is a pity because i had hoped they would fill the space left when he lost his friend. still there's time yet maybe he'll make friends with them too.
